Carved Wood Angel Heads (Large). 19th Century, Italy

Very rare late 19th century Italian Angel (Putto, Putti, Cherub, Amorini) Heads. These are carved out of wood, gessoed and polychrome painted. Beautiful colors and shiny patina. Approximate dimensions for each head is 8" High x 7" Wide x 6.5" Deep. Estimate this size 3/4 life size. Largest putto heads so far I have seen. Very hard to find at this size and quality. They have reverse painted glass eyes and are very lifelike. Some paint chipping at the wings. These pieces once adorned a lifesize processional statue. They were hanged and carried in a wooden carriage called "caroza", upon retirement they adorned a private chapel in an estate. Overall condition is excellent for their age. Will sell only as a pair.
