Classic Baroque Style!
This is an 18th century wood carving of Saint Francis of Asissi from Europe, probably Italian. It is a fragment of a larger altar set-up most probably Saint Francis laying on his knees on a rock beside the cross of the Crucified Christ (this is missing and may be a larger portion of the tableau. San Francisco’s right hand is clasped toward his chest and his left hand pointing sideways as if showing something behind him. At the back of the piece is a piece of dowel protruding about an inch (this probably used to attached it to the base of the tableau). There is also an old eyebolt attached to the back where it could be hanged on the wall (it will hang perfectly on a wall).
The piece is polychrome painted over gesso with gold gilt trimming and highlights along the vestment. Natural paint chipping and age crackling, but adhesion of existing paint to wood is excellent. Wood is very dense and heavy with natural dark pigmentation (unsure of the type of wood). No insect damage whatsoever and wood is intact). All fingers of the left hand are missing. Saint Francis attribute (nail marks on hands are still visible) representing the crucified hands of Christ. Natural paint crackling and peeled paint on tip of nose.
He is a large 13” H x 8 ½” W x 5 ½” D and weighs 2 lbs, 6 Oz.
