Nossa Senhora da Conceição
This is a finely carved early 19th century Portuguese Colonial santos from Brazil, Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Immaculate Conception), handcarved, gessoed thickly and polychrome painted. This is a beautiful colorful piece and highly detailed and has a baroque quality that is reflected in the "estofado" style. She has tiny glass eyes made of precious stones and three beautiful cherubs below her attached to the clouds. Polychrome paint have been stabilized to prevent further deterioration. An array of paint colors in gold, deep blue, light blue, white, brown and pink. This piece has no missing parts. The filigree crown is from a later period (early 20th C.) and is hallmarked Eagle head at the base rim with number 833. Crown is 1.5"H x 1"W and weighs 5gms. It is very difficult to find a crown that size and condition. The top cross finial and ball is removable screw in type typical of high quality miniaturized Portuguese crowns. They are actually made as jewelry for the santos. This is a very desirable piece for the collector of Portuguese Colonial santos. Last picture is for comparison only.
Dimensions: 11.75" high (to top of crown) x 4.25" wide x 3.5" deep and weighs 13.1 oz.
