San Miguel Arcangel, 19th Century, Europe
Superb Santo with Tin Wings!

This is an early 19th century wood carving of “San Miguel Arcangel” or Saint “Michael the Archangel”. This came from an estate whose owner says his grandfather collected it in Europe. It is possible that this was imported from South America judging from the styling. Some broken fingertips broken long ago (the broken tips are covered with dark patina). He may be holding a sword with his right hand and a weighing scale with his left hand. Both attributes are missing. Other than that this piece is solid. Unique and rare about piece is the presence of its original tin wings. Painting on wings is crackled over time, but is very stable. Very dark patina over its retained original color.
