Superb Santo with Tin Wings!
This is an early 20th century wood carving of “San Miguel Arcangel” or Saint “Michael the Archangel”. This came from an estate whose owner collected Central and South American santos in the 50's and 60's. It is possible that this is from Honduras or Guatemala. He may be holding a sword with his right hand and a weighing scale with his left hand. Both attributes are missing. The styling is typical central american santo where the extremeties are oversized and the body is bulky. This piece is solid, no damage to the wood, right hand a bit loose (but firmly nailed). Detailed painting with floral design and minimal paint loss. Original wings have been re-nailed several times. Unique to this piece is his right foot heel is halfway up as if ready to pounce on someone.
