A LARGE late 19th century rendition of Our Lady of Guadalupe or Immaculate Conception (Immaculate Conception), handcarved, profusely gessoed and polychrome painted in vibrant gold, green, yellow and silver. The color has majestically aged and is now covered with shiny dark patina that gives it a rich and elegant look. Very unique to this piece is her halo/resplandor made like a wreath of roses. The roses are symbolic of her appearance the Mexican native saint Juan Diego to whom she had an apparition. This is a first for me to see a halo of roses. She is carved out of light wood almost resembling large native cactus wood varieties. She is in SUPERB condition and has only a few paint loss in some areas (note the exposure of the white gesso) and this can be easily touched-up if one so desires. This piece is all original and has only minor crack repair at the back of the crown and reattached half moon/horns at one time. The presence of the huge original half moon/horns are a plus to the value of this piece. Dimensions 22.5" high x 12" wide x 5.5" deep and weighs 2.6 lbs.
