This is an 18th century altar crucifix from South America (exact provenance is unknown). Most fingers are missing nailed in a dark heavy wood cross that seems to be a little narrow for the overly extended arms. Heavy patina on corpus which is largely well preserved except for the missing fingers. Eery lifelike appearance evoked by the inset glass eyes which are rare for corpus pieces. All carved wood, gessoed and polychrome painted. The base of the cross is carved to form a dowel to be inserted into a base. The original base is missing.
Size: Cross 18” high X 9" Wide ( Corpus only = 12" high X 8.5" wide)
Weight = 1 lb., 2.4 oz.
