This is a RARE HIGH END carved wood image of Saint John the Baptist or San Juan Bautista made during the 18th century. It is indeed rare to see a carving in such detail and almost complete with its attributes, except for the missing tiny sheep on top of the book. It is all original including the steel staff with a carved wood flower at the tip, the ornate base and the book he is holding. The base is decorated with carved achantus leaves on each corner and is in two pieces (top and bottom) connected by dowels. San Juan is also connected to the base by a large wood dowel. He has glass eyes but the right one is missing. Weight = 1# 10 oz. Dimensions: 12.75” high X 5” wide X 4.5” deep at the base
