A Glass Eyed Rarity! Price Reduced!
This is a Spanish Colonial Polychrome Gesso over Wood Santo Nino de Praga or Infant of Prague holding a globe. It is missing four fingers and part of two feet. Beautiful patina which is darker at the head and forearms indicating that he has been dressed for many years. He has reverse painted glass eyes embedded in the face through hollow eye sockets. Note the cut of wood above his eyebrows that is now showing. This is the wood part added to make room for the eyes inside the face. Very solid wood condition with no worm damage.
Very very old wherein the method of attachment is done solely by wood dowels. The lower arms are doweled to the upper arms and the upper arms are also doweled to the body. The lower and upper arms joints are then wrapped with linen and glued. Gesso and polychrome is then applied.
This piece came from a Florida estate and has been with the family for many generations.
He is late 17th to early 18th Century (Late Baroque Period 1660-1725) probably from Mexico assessing from the style (oversize primitive head).
