This is a large ivory head of a Santo Nino, Nino de Praga or Infant of Prague. It was carved in the Philippines as indicated by the carvers’ signature “Marcial Bernales, 10-13-80” at the base bottom. Mr. Bernales is a renowned Philippine sculptor of religious objects. These are no longer made these days because of the ivory ban in 1989. The head comes with a new carved solid wood museum base.
These type of carvings until these days are a status symbol for the elite in the Philippines. The head will usually come with a pair of matching hands and sometimes with ivory feet too. The body will be carved wood with articulated arms and the ivory parts will be attached to the body with wood dowels. The finished santos will then be dressed in elaborately embroidered vestments and accessorized with a wig, a crown, a scepter, a globe with cross on top and metal boots.

Dimensions: Head = 6 5/8” high X 4 ¾ ” wide X 4 ¾” deep, Base = 11” high X 5” wide X 5” deep, Total height (head + base) = 17 5/8” high
