This is a rare Spanish Colonial santo of San Antonio de Padua from the 18th century Portuguese colony of Goa India, carved from wood and ivory, applied gesso and polychrome painted with traces of gold leaf. The head was carved from solid elephant ivory with mellow honey gold patina, age lines and beautiful grains. Very well-carved facial features with hair locks in very intricate “pancit” style. This piece still has its original attributes. The child Jesus in encarnada style paint has a primitive face held on a book on his left arm and an ivory cross is held on his right hand. It is very rare if not impossible to have a double pouch sack straddled on his left shoulder(the pouches as shown in front and on his back). The sack is not a normal attribute of the saint as well as the cross. The Child Jesus, the book, a bread,a frond of lily, a flame or fire are his main attributes. There are insect holes throughout the body but these did not totally damaged the wood and it is still firm, heavy and solid. The silver halo is not original to the piece and included in the sale. The base is a newer base and is also included in the sale.

Dimensions: Halo = 2.5" diameter, Head = 2" high X 1.4" wide X 1.75" deep, Cross = 1.25" high X 0.9" wide, Saint = 11.5" high X 5" wide X 4" deep, Base = 3.5" high, Total Height = 15" high

Weight: 2 lbs., 2 oz.
