Saint Anne and the Child Mary, 19th Century, Indo-Portuguese
Saint Anne (Hebrew, Hannah, grace; also spelled Ann, Anne, Anna) is the traditional name of the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
This is a 19th century carving of Saint Anne or Santa Ana and the Virgin Mary reading a book. It is interesting to note that there is an initial/signature written and dated Aug. 20, 1927. This is probably one of its owners during its lifetime and is not representative of its age. There is also a calligraphy writing at the back “N. Sra. De S. Ana” This writing seems to be more original to the piece and is indicative of earlier writing (18-19th century).
