RARE!
You are looking
at an amazing estate find of the Tres Marias Palo de Santo from Spanish Colonial Puerto Rico,
early to mid 19th century. Las Tres Marias representan a las tres
mujeres que visitaron el sepulcro de Cristo. Maria de Betania, hermana de
Lázaro, y Marta, hermana de la Virgen María y Maria Salomé, madre de Santiago y
de Juan Evangelista. (the Three Mary’s represent the three women who visited
the tomb of Christ Mary of Betania and Martha the sisters of Lazarus and Mary
Salome the mother of Saint John the Evangelist). Puerto Rico Santos de Palo are
very sought after and therefore are very expensive. We have seen similar pieces
of the same age like the Tres Reyes de Magos run in the $3K range. The Tres
Marias are not commonly seen.
Left and middle
figure are missing hands. The middle figure has worm damage at the back of her head. All have been reglued to the
base and have old glue residue. Great Folk Art charm and color retention.
This piece sits
on a larger wooden base 8 ¼” wide X 4” deep X 2” high. The smaller base is 7 ¼”
wide X 1 ¾” deep X ¾” high. The Tres Marias are 4 ¾” high X 2” wide X 1” deep.
Total height of figure is 7 ¾”. Weight = 1#, 10.6 oz.
