This is the image of the Madonna and Child or Virgen Maria con el Nino Jesus. One of the more commonly carved representation of the Mother and Child Jesus in the Philippines. As related in the other pieces for sale, there are various names attributed to this image depending on the locality where it is venerated. Filipino in origin coming from the southern part of the country, Visayas region and province of Iloilo (judging from the hair styling). This is a late 18th C. or early 19th C. piece judging from the head styling (large head, prominent forehead and bulging eyes). Provenance also supported by history related by original owner and expert opinion from a noted Filipino collector.
This piece was carved in the round (single piece of wood) from a fine grained medium heavy yellowish type of hardwood. The only wood damage is a small chip where the right hand was once attached and and age cracks at the front and back of the base. It was once covered with a light green water based paint. We stripped a portion of this paint and thus revealed some of the original paint in hues of blue, red, gold and yellow. The overpaint of light green has actually preserved the original paint from further peeling off. The overpaint was obviously done many years ago by an unknowing owner who obviously do not know the importance of this piece. Overall this is a wonderful piece of art from the past to last for many more centuries.
