This is a wonderful early19th century polychrome painted over gesso carved wood tableau of St. Anne and the Child Mary. Saint Anne (Hebrew, Hannah, grace; also spelled Ann, Anne, Anna) is the traditional name of the mother of the Virgin Mary. It is very rarely seen tableau in Filipino and we think in this market a Philippine santos of this type is the only one available. Lavish application of turmeric yellow indicates that it comes from the Northern provinces. View the pictures and one can assess the beauty of this authentic carving. This is a larger image never been on the market and will run over $2K's in galleries. Two small cracks on the front base. Two wood dowels sticking out on each side of the base. These may have been used to attached elaborate carved trimmings such as floral embellishments. Child Mary  is missing tips of her feet, both hands and a book she is supposedly holding while St. Anne is instructing her. St Anne’s left hand is also missing as well as halos for each of them. Surprisingly, St. Anne still has her original right hand largely because it was secured by a nail. St. Anne and Mary are sporting an aquiline nose definitions suggesting that the native craftsmen are influenced by imported images during those times. The tableau has paint losses commensurate with age and has probably been repainted at a later time due to presence of over paint. Underneath the base, both pieces are attached with wood dowels and nails. Wonderful patina on the whole tableau and a blend of multiple colors green and maroon on the base and yellow, blue, white, gold, black and fleshtones on the figures.
