This is an antique early19th century carved wood Santo figure in excellent condition. It is a typical representation of Saint Anthony or San Antonio de Padua carved in the Southern Provinces. His right hand may have been holding a silver lily flower (one of his attributes) and halo missing. He is holding on his left hand the Child Jesus sitting on a book (the Child Jesus and the Bible are his two other attributes). Although San Antonio carvings are common, this piece is very unique since it still has the original Child Jesus. We have seen pieces similar to these that are entirely replicas or have missing pieces added or restored. This is an original and unrestored as found. Notice the third to the last picture showing missing brown paint and underneath it is gold gilding. This indicates that the brown paint is overpaint and the original paint is gold over some other paint. This technique is called "estofado" style. This means that the San Antonio is one of the higher end, probably a commissioned custom piece.
The santo measures about 13.5"tall X 4.25"wide X 4.4" inches deep at the base and weighs 1lb. 7.4 oz.  It is made entirely of a dense hardwood and no insect damage. There are two 2" long chips at the base, but it stands very stable. This is truly a unique piece, was carved in full attention to details and he still have his original hands.
