This is a late 19th century image of Our Lady of Miraculous Medal or Nuestra Senora Medalla Milagrosa. It is carved in the round (meaning carved out of one piece of wood), has major polychrome loss, traces of polychrome all over her and some white gesso on the right side of her robe. She stands on a cloud crushing a snake with her feet. Her hands are supposed to spread on each side are missing and she has old chips on the right side of her crown. Old carvings of the miraculous medal are rarely seen and this is the first time we had one and certainly more difficult to find one in this condition. Note her deepset eyes and aquiline nose. Her facial features well preserved although stripped down to the bare wood. She has very dark patina all over consistent with her age.

Dimensions:  14.25” tall X 4.75” wide X 3” deep,  Weight:  1 lb., 5.1 oz.

Historical Notes:  The Miraculous Medal, Mary stands on a globe, representing the earth, with a crushed snake under her feet. This image represents Mary's role as "Queen of Heaven and Earth". The snake represents Satan, who was defeated by Mary's obedience to God. The rays coming from her hands symbolize the graces Mary gives to those who ask her. The year 1830 commemorates the year that the Blessed Mother appeared to St. Catherine Laboure. Her feast day is Nov. 27.
