Pedestal, Base or Peana for Santos #2, 19th C., Philippines
This is an early 19th century carved wood base or Peana which belonged to an ivory saint figure. Foliate and lotus leaf/pods design were popular during the 18th and 19th century carved for the elite populace of that era. It is rare to find these types of bases nowadays especially in this condition. There is very little imperfection. As was the standard during those times, the base was coated repeatedly with gesso and finished with bole and was gold gilted. There are traces of gold all around it and the white matter is what is left of the gesso over the exposed wood. The upper and lower parts of the base are new additions to make the original base more stable and functional. These pieces were also coated with gesso/bole and finally gold gilted with 24k gold leaf. Screws were used to attach the upper and lower parts so that the old base can be completely detached if desired. Saint shown in the picture is for illustration only and is not NOT Included in the sale.
