This is a 19th C. Brazilian carved wood over gesso and polychrome image of San Rafael de Archangel (Saint Raphael the Archangel). He can also be possibly another Archangel like the angel Gabriel since he has no attributes present. Gabriel will normally hold some Lilies and Rafael will normally hold a staff and a fish. There is no evidence that the piece had ever had any wings. His fingers are completeand are very detailed despite his size. The fingers are made of wire from the inside so they are very sturdy. He has reverse painted glass eyes. Beautiful bright colors and gold gilt decorations. He may have been a part of a tableau since there is a piece of dowel on the base indicating he was attached to some sort of a base. Minor paint loss and chip on nose.
SPECIFICATIONS: · Dimensions: Stands 8.25"H x 3.25"W x 2"D., Weight: 5.3oz.
