This is an early 20th century carved wood image Our Lady of Solitude or Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. Carved by the renowned Cortes santero family. It is signed R. Cortes, Jr. at the right side front of the base. The piece is in almost pristine condition except for the paint chip at the top front of the base (see pictures). Beautiful color combinations of dark blue, burgundy and gold gilding. The paint is "estofado style". A process where bole is applied over gesso and gold leaf is then applied over the bole. The artist then paints the carving to the desired colors over the gold gilt. The gold is exposed under the paint by scratching the paint with a sharp object. The artist draws through the paint using the sharp object and the final result looks like the gold is the drawing medium. This one is a Cortes martepiece created by R. Cortes, Jr. and much higher quality and larger in size than most Cortes carvings. The wood is heavy and solid.
