Saint Anne & Virgin Mary, early 20th C., Germany
This is a wonderful early 20th century polychrome painted over gesso carved wood tableau of St. Anne and the Child Mary. Saint Anne (Hebrew, Hannah, grace; also spelled Ann, Anne, Anna) is the traditional name of the mother of the Virgin Mary. It was carved in Western Europe in the German Alps. It has muted color scheme typical of the era in forest green, dark browns, oranges and gold gilding. Minor paint loss that can be easily touched up if desired. This piece is in original unrestored condition having been stored in a glass case for many years which explains its excellent condition. There are woodworm flight holes at the back only, but damage is really superficial since the wood has remained stable and heavy. It may have been a part of a larger altar scene explaining the semi flat back, an old nail and a hole at the base bottom. Compare this piece with ANRI mid 20th C. pieces SKU# 2010109 & 2016125. Overall, it's a beautiful traditional Cathoilc piece!
