This is the Our Lady of Perpetual Help (also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Succour) in carved wood and polychrome painted. She is the Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary as represented in a celebrated 15th-century Byzantine icon. The Icon is very popular and is copied and displayed in many catholic homes and places of congregation. It is very popular in Russia and is mainly produced in frames combined with a painting of the image and handworked silver sheets. It is rarely seen in carved form as in this case. It is a larger piece carved in the round with muted colors of reds, browns and greens. Provenance is Western Europe probably early to mid 20th century indicated by a few woodworm flight holes (6 holes) present and obvious aging. Wood is solid and heavy.
