This is an early 20th century carved wood image Our Lady of Solitude or Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Oaxaca. Carved by the renowned Cortes santero family. It is signed M. Cortes at the right side front of the base. At the back part where it is bare wood is written by hand Mexico and a label with an old price tag 225. Beautiful color combinations of very dark brown and gold at the vestiture and bright yellow at the facial aureole. Face and hands are smooth shiny ivory color. The base, crown and resplandor (halo) color combinations are gold gilting and thick oil painted spots of turquoise. The tiny cross on the crown is intact.
The paint style is similar from the ancient estofado style but instead of the gold being scratched off to expose the paint underneath, gold leaf was applied over the painted and carved surface. It was then wiped off and the gold underneath the carved surface remained and the shiny dark brown primary surface was exposed. The wood is heavy and solid.
CONDITION:   The piece is in very good condition.  The paint is in very good condition maintaining original coloring and texture. Some paint loss at the crown. Three reglued halo tips at the top right side (not noticeable from the front). Reglued index fingers. Wood chip left lowest side of vestiture. Dent at lower left side of base where the S in Soledad was chipped.
Size:    Stands approximately 11" high x 7.75" wide x 2.25" deep.

Weight:  10 oz.
