This is an early 20th century carved wood image of Our Lady of Guadalupe or Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (generally recognized as a symbol of all Catholic Mexicans). Carved by the renowned Cortes santero family. It is signed three times D. Cortes at the front of the base which is a rare occurence. Note one missing ray on top right. This piece is a little bit bigger and heavier and better condition than the other similar pieces. Probably made much earlier due to accumulated patina. There are versions of this piece made by the same artist that are very colorful and decorated with various details but this one is simpler and carved by the elder of the Cortes family.
